Since diving is considered as one of the main activities in Moalboal, diving equipment rental services are necessary. A very popular sport among local and foreign tourists, there are a number of things to consider in scuba diving. Scuba diving would not be complete without the different scuba equipment. These sets of equipment are not just there as mere accessories, they are essential to make scuba diving a safe adventure. Furthermore, these different sets of scuba diving equipment are manufactured using materials ideal for a diving environment. Moreover, one important thing that should not be missed when scuba diving is the scuba gear. Generally, scuba gear are designed to avoid losing body heat since diving can cause hypothermia, thus divers need wetsuits or dry suits since they are equipped with thermal insulation. These scuba gears are also for rent and some are for sale. The wetsuit, made from neoprene, is designed to minimize heat loss. On the other hand, a dry suit is designed to keep a diver dry. In addition, extra gas bottle which contains argon gas for better insulation compared with air used to fill the dry suit are carried by some divers. Generally, dry suits either utilise neoprene and membrane. Lastly, dry suits also help in preventing skin damage to divers. Moalboal fiesta

When the name Moalboal is mentioned, the first thing that may come to one’s mind is diving. It is true that this paradise is a diving haven, but aside from its beautiful natural attractions that draw both local and foreign tourists to the municipality, Moalboal also features a rich, colourful culture and tradition that can be best experience and see in the municipality’s fiestas and other cultural celebrations. When you happen to visit the Moalboal during the fiesta season, do not miss to enjoy the town fiesta and its 15 barangay fiestas.

The annual Moalboal Town Fiesta, which is celebrated every month of May in honour of
patron saint, San Juan Nepomuceno, usually runs for more than week like the fiestas in other Philippine municipalities and cities. The town fiesta includes various activities and competitions such as inter-town basketball competition, motocross, band showdown, disco and drinking nights, and beauty pageants.

On the other hand, the barangay fiestas in Moalboal are not as extravagant as the municipal fiesta. But they also feature exciting activities and enjoyable programs, which may include a cock fight for adults, nightly discos or what is known as “bayle” for teens, games like bamboo pole climbing or “palasebo” for both kids and adults, and a rich feast for family and guests.SantacruzanPerhaps the best month of the year to visit Moalboal is May. It is when the summer sun is at its best and when there are a lot of cultural events to enjoy, such as the town fiesta and the Santacruzan. Like other catholic communities in the Philippines, the barangays of Moalboal also celebrate this religious-historical parade that marks the end of the Flores de Mayo or the flower festival of May. The Santacruzan is held in honour of Reyna Elena, also known as Helena of Constantinople, who is traditionally accounted with the finding of the relic of the True Cross which Jesus was crucified.

Other entertainment

The town is decked out for fiesta time.

Moalboal is not a place for night party people, but this does not mean that the place is boring or what. It’s just that there are no disco and go-go clubs in the area because the ‘bar village’ was demolished in 2007. However, there are still a number of bars and restaurants along the beach area that offer great food and music entertainment. Moreover, a popular disco is organised from night until dawn every Saturday night at Pacitas Nipa Hut Resort, allowing visitors to enjoy a night of dancing, music and drinking after a week of communing with Mother Nature.

History, Culture, People

When you visit Cebu and head to the west coast, you will find Moalboal, a municipality gifted with rich marine resources, scenic landscape and good-natured people. And let us take you to the memory lane how this place got its name. According to legend there was a foreigner who once asked a woman with a cleft what the place was called, but unfortunately the woman misunderstood the question and thinking that she was asked about the spring. And answered ‘bukal-bukal’ (which means bubbling) but was mispronounced as Moalboal due to her speech difficulty. Today, this popular place is the one of the favourite diving spot in Cebu.

The People And Their LanguageMoalboal is populated with a mixture of native Cebuanos, Spanish and Chinese Ancestry. The locals call themselves Moalboalanons, taken from the town’s name. Majority of the Moalboalnons are Cebuanos though some claim to have come from Bohalanon descendants and a few cultural minorities found their way to the shores of Moalboal. And it is said that the first settlers was a Boholanon fugitive, Laguno Sabanal. This Boholanon fugitive brought his relatives and friends where they decided to settle in the place. Laguno Sabanal was said to have mythical powers defending the residents with his ‘oracion’ (a native prayer) driving away Moro pirates from looting and invading the place. So, when Laguno Sabanal died he was buried in the sandyshore near the bubbling fresh water spring where a large log was placed over the burial ground which until today can be found.

Moalboalnons speak Cebuano as their native tongue, however Cebuanos in Moalboal has some faint differences from the speech intonation that of which spoken in the city. And since the place is surrounded with water, majority of the residence in Moalboal who live in the flat lands make their way of living by fishing while the residents in the mountainous make a living through farming.
